BOLD FUTURE Campaign Question: Why Build a Gymnasium?

Our initial BOLD FUTURE Campaign fundraising goal of $8M and expansion plans include a full-size gymnasium. Since we would need raise at least an additional $4M ($12M total) to think seriously about moving St. Michael Catholic School (StMCS) to Frankfort Parkway, you might wonder why we are building a gym—what would we do with that space besides physical education classes?

Unity Hall Overflow (adjacent Gymnasium expands our event capacity)
  • Large wedding receptions or funerals
  • Discipleship group (D-group) breakout space
  • LIFT or other faith formation programs
  • Activity space for kids after Mass, during MOMs group, etc.
  • Hosting multiple larger events or activities at the same time (e.g., an Engaged Couple retreat on the same day as a wedding)
StMCS Preschool (would move to Frankfort in the initial expansion)
  • Indoor activities during inclement weather
Youth Ministry (700+ students in grades 4-12)
  • Indoor games and activities (as needed for all grades and ages)
  • Open Youth Room (every Wednesdays for middle school students)
  • Friday Night Live (monthly for middle school students)
  • Core Team activities (monthly for high school activities)
  • 4th/5th Grade Fun Nights (monthly for 4th and 5th grade students)
  • Catholic Prom (annually for high school students)
Faith Formation (hundreds of families/year)
  • Indoor games and activities (as needed for all grades and ages)
  • Sacrament staging/rehearsal space (Confirmation, First Communion, etc.)
Community-Wide or Archdiocesan Events (potential to serve thousands of people)
  • Expand indoor activities Fall Festival or move indoors during inclement weather
  • Expand Winterfest activities
  • Host StMCS Bids for Kids Gala on-site
  • Host other large events for organizations affiliated with parish (Cornerstone Women’s Center, Society of St. Vincent de Paul, etc.)
  • Host Archdiocesan events and conferences
Other Ministries (any activity that benefits from open space and easy-to-clean floors)
  • Palm cleaning and preparation, Shoebox Ministry gift box assembly, etc.
New Activities and Outreach Ministries
  • Volleyball, basketball or other sports leagues for young adults and others
  • SoulCore fitness program
  • Swing-dancing, square-dancing, etc.
  • StMCS academic, arts or sports club activities (robotics, Destination Imagination, etc.)
  • Parishioner groups: Heritage Girls, Blue Knights, etc.
  • Indoor walking space for seniors
